Gretchen Parlato's latest work is a collaborative album with her ally, genius guitarist Lionel Loueke, and finally realized after 20 years.
In her latest work, Gretchen Parlato has evolved musically as an artist from her previous work "Flor", and since the debut work "gretchen parlato" released the year after she won the 2004 Thelonious Monk Competition. It is a collaboration album with Lionel Loueke, a guitarist from the West African Republic of Benin, who played an important part in the album sound. Lionel Loueke has performed with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Miho Hasama, and others, and in 2012, Robert Glasper's production "Heritage", members of Blue Note All Stars led by Glasper (2017), Harbie Hancock collection "HH" (2020) ~ Giles Peterson's "HH Reimagined" was released in the fall of 2022 ~ A guitarist who is showing off his one & only presence to the world. Gretchen has been an ally for more than 20 years since the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz era, and the long-awaited full-fledged collaboration work has finally been realized.
Gretchen's profound vocals and outstanding sense of rhythm, and Lionel's various percussive guitar playing techniques and vocals using click sounds characteristic of southern Africa are built as an organic ensemble, making it the highest peak of contemporary jazz music. With content full of skills, it was recorded in LA from February to April 2022. The two also played percussion, and Mark Guiliana (ds, perc) and Bernice Travis (b) also participated. Her beloved son Marley Guiliana also participates in three songs with voice, effectively making children's voices, which have a high affinity with African music, part of the ensemble.
The songs included are female R&B groups that had hits in the 80s and 90s, a cover of Climax (M2), and a famous song sung by Ellis Regina as "Samba Da Pergunta" in her 1969 masterpiece "Como y Polque" ( M5), "Nonbinon" (M8), which Gretchen featured in her first album, and a cover (M12) from Foo Fighters' 1997 work "The Color and the Shape". Their original songs, as well as those co-written with Mark Guiliana and others, express a world of unparalleled swaying African grooves, Brazilian music, jazz, and more.

■前作『フロール』でさらに音楽的、アーティスト的に進化したグレッチェン・パーラトの最新作は、自身が2004年セロニアス・モンク・コンペでウィナーを勝ち取った翌年に発表したデビュー作『gretchen parlato』で、そのアルバム・サウンドの重要なパートを担っていた西アフリカ ベナン共和国出身のギタリスト、リオーネル・ルエケとのコラボ・アルバム。リオーネル・ルエケはハービー・ハンコック、エスペランサ・スポルディング、挾間美帆他と共演し、2012年にはロバート・グラスパーのプロデュース作『Heritage』、さらにグラスパー率いるブルーノート・オールスターズのメンバー(2017)や、ハービー・ハンコック集『HH』(2020)～ジャイルス・ピーターソンによる『HH Reimagined』が2022年秋リリース～等でワン&オンリーの存在感を世界中に見せつけているギタリスト。グレッチェンとはセロニアス・モンク・インスティチュート・オブ・ジャズ時代から20年以上にもわたる盟友でもあり、ようやく実現した待望の本格的コラボレイト作品。
■グレッチェンの深遠ともいえるヴォーカルと抜群のリズム感覚、そしてリオーネルの様々なパーカッシヴ・ギター奏法と、アフリカ南部で特徴的なクリック音を用いるヴォーカルが有機的なアンサンブルとして構築され、現代ジャズ最高峰の音楽的スキルに満ちた内容。レコーディングは2022年2月～4月LA録音。二人はそれぞれパーカッションも演奏、さらにマーク・ジュリアナ(ds, pesc)、バーニス・トラヴィス(b)も参加。愛息マーレー・ジュリアナもヴォイスで3曲参加しており、アフリカ音楽との親和性も高い子供の声を効果的にアンサンブルの一部にしている。
■収録曲は80～90年代にヒット曲を連発した女性R&Bグループ、クライマックスのカヴァー(M2)、エリス・レジーナが1969年名作『コモ・イ・ポルケ』で「Samba Da Pergunta」として歌った名曲(M5)、そしてグレッチェンが自身の1stアルバムでもとりあげた「ノンビニョン」(M8)、さらにフー・ファイターズ97年作『ザ・カラー・アンド・ザ・シェイプ』からのカヴァー(M12)等を収録。二人のオリジナル曲でも、マーク・ジュリアナ他との共作などでは、たゆたうようなアフリカン・グルーヴやブラジル音楽、ジャズ他が一体となった極上の世界を表現している。
