A thunderous standing ovation @ North Sea
Barefoot, she appeared on stage, because her luggage was lost somewhere. And further, her shakers were also in those suitcases. But Gretchen Parlato made a virtue of necessity, and from two empty bottles of mineral water, some brown rice and beans made two new shakers. She used them in a beautiful but far too short set in the Missouri bursting at the seams tent. De stem van Gretchen Parlato is een wonder. De Amerikaanse zangeres heeft een ideale balans tussen precisie en flexibiliteit. Parlato is nooit voorspelbaar, improviseert voortdurend en laat de grens tussen vocaal en instrumentaal vervagen. Vier jaar na haar titelloze debuut kwam onlangs In a Dream uit. Daarop neemt ze de luisteraar mee langs Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock en Wayne Shorter, maar laat ze ook eigen nummers horen. Ze wordt begeleid door een virtuoos kwartet op toetsen, bas, gitaar en drums dat ze mee neemt naar Rotterdam. Herbie Hancock kwalificeerde haar zangkunst als een 'diepe, magische verbinding tot muziek'. Wayne Shorter vindt dat ze 'op een onopvallende manier hetzelfde instrument bespeelt als Frank Sinatra'. Parlato's vertrekpunt is jazz, maar haar stem gaat veel verder. Opvallend is haar timing en subtiliteit. Daarmee kan ze een moeilijk liedje heel makkelijk laten klinken.

"But I feel like this strong and informed and creative sensibility, from young singers of many persuasions, is resounding in the culture now." ...
